Understanding Trauma's Impact

Get everyone on your team a foundational understanding of trauma and its far-reaching effects. Learn how trauma manifests beyond single catastrophic events, emerging from experiences in homes, communities, and the broader environment. Through evidence-based research and real-world examples, explore:

  • How trauma affects individuals differently, from childhood experiences (ACEs) to professional exposure (vicarious trauma)

Foundations of Trauma-Aware Communication

Learn practical skills for creating trauma-aware environments and interactions. This component covers:

  • Specific communication techniques that promote safety and trust
  • Active listening and nonverbal communication strategies
  • Methods for creating supportive environments
  • Practices to avoid re-traumatization while fostering healing and growth

The Journey to STAR Certification

Phase 1: Planning and Assessment

  • Develop a detailed training timeline
  • Assess resource requirements, especially who at the organization will be the point person(s) to communicate with the team
  • Create implementation strategy

Phase 2: Training Implementation

  • Complete 20-hour professional certification for 10% of the team, the STAR Champions
  • Roll out 3-hour foundational training to up to 90% of your staff
  • Track progress and maintain momentum with weekly tracking reports from FSU

Phase 3: Integration

  • Apply evidence-based practices to enhance organizational policies and procedures
  • Contribute to groundbreaking FSU research on trauma's impact across organizations, families, and institutions
  • Document and evaluate your organization's transformation journey
  • Achieve formal STAR Certification

Phase 4: Sustainability

  • Incorporate training into employee onboarding
  • Empower STAR Champions as organizational leaders
  • Maintain certification through regular renewal process
